Neomycin is an aminoglycoside bactericidal antibiotic that binds to the 30S and in some cases the 50S subunit causing miscoding. Neomycin also inhibits initiation and elongation. Antimicrobial spectrum includes Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria.

Features & Benefits

  • Ready-to-use solution - no sterile filtration required
  • Stable - store at -20°C for up to 12 months
  • Simple - avoids handling of toxic or harmful substances

Applications

  • Cell culture
  • Plasmid selection
  • Gene regulation

Description

Neomycin belongs to the aminoglycoside class of antibiotics that contain two or more aminosugars connected by glycosidic bonds. It acts as an inhibitor of protein biosynthesis. Neomycin binds to the 30S and in some cases the 50S subunit causing miscoding. Neomycin also inhibits initiation and elongation during protein synthesis.

Antimicrobial spectrum includes Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Neomycin resistance is mediated by aminoglycoside phosphotransferase (nptII gene), which inactivates neomycin by phosphorylation.
